mp3: Inspirational Track Of The Day #5 – Vivian Girls

Vivian Girls – I Heard You Say

[POLYVINYL]

Vivian Girls are a female indie-rock trio from Brooklyn. They formed in 2007 and after only a couple of months together had grasped support slots for the likes of Sonic Youth and Jay Reatard. In the spring of 2011 the girls will release their third album Share The Joy on Polyvinyl Record Co. (Deerhoof!). It can only be a blessing in disguise when you lose your drummer to another band (Best Coast), pick up a new one, and return to your 2008 form.

‘I Heard You Say’ is a really great introduction to a band that really is only just finding its feet. After the acapella refrain and Pixies style guitar intro, both characteristics of which essentially set the mood for what Vivian Girls are all about, a startling well composed song along the lines of Blondie is revealed.

Initially the dissonance of the vocal may seem like an elephant in the room, but this imperfection only adds to the attitude and it is an attribute related only to the verses. Because what’s this? Only a bloody pre-chorus! And a really catchy one at that. Robin Pecknold recently said on Twitter that the new Vivian Girls song is “really good”, and when it really matters they can really deliver. (Is that album art a Rembrandt or a Monet?)
