TV On The Radio – You

[4AD/INTERSCOPE]

TV On The Radio have been around since 2001 and released four studio albums to date, including the most recent Nine Types of Light on April 12th, 2011. Whilst I’ve always been aware of their presence since a funky appearance on Later…with Jools Holland in 2008, it’s only through this dashing number that I’ve entered the craze head on. If I was Zane Lowe, I’d call this “ma hottist recurd in tha wuld rite naw”.

The record release was interestingly coupled with a one-hour film comprising of music videos for all 10 songs, with singer Tunde Adebimpe (the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie) story-booking the various videos together using interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics such as dreams, love, fame and the future.

Easily the strongest song from the album, the phat beat and bass bop between eachother in a manner that suggests an allergy to keeping still, especially as the chorus kicks in with a falsetto “constantly on”.

As far as this poignant video goes, the band have already said Prince’s Purple Rain is a classic…although I’m also thinking a Pulp Fiction era Samuel L Jackson. Highly cool.

You can watch the entire Nine Types of Light movie here, streaming from the band’s YouTube account.
