gig preview: Kurt Vile @ The Fleece, Bristol
On Wednesday, Sept 7th, Kurt Vile brings his current tour to a close in the second from last city on the list, Bristol. Make sure you get your mits on the split 7″ available between Vile and the support band Woods.
Whilst Smoke Ring For My Halo is easily his best work by far, please find below and indulge in two true gems from his overlooked 2008 début album Constant Hitmaker. The former ‘Slow Talkers’ showcases a tender solo acoustic piece in the vein of Dylan and the Tallest Man On Earth. Whilst the more upbeat ‘Freeway’ illustrates Kurt’s deft knack for singalong anthems. I love the glass-half-full feel to the melody, and a quirky off the shoulder rhyming couplet to match:”I’ve got a trumpet, I know where to dump it”.
There’s something endlessly admirable and completely satisfying about hearing somebody just singing within the comfort of their range. Earlier today Bella Union, home of Fleet Foxes, tweeted: “Kurt Vile’s drummer has SUCH a superb kit and sound..Huuuuuge”, I suggest you go and witness it for yourself.
