mp3: Gorillaz – ‘DoYaThing’ (Feat. Andre 3000 & James Murphy)
Today, over at their website, American lifestyle clothing giant Converse are offering an exclusive free download of a new Gorillaz track, featuring Outkast’s Andre 3000 and LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy.
‘DoYaThing’ is an almost predictable Albarn affair, with slurry vocals and DIY beats tied together by uber cool free-form rap. It’s a commercial release which aims to promote a new line of trainers, designed by comic book and Gorillaz artist-in-residence Jamie Hewlett. It’s the latest (and strongest) installment of the “3 Artists. 1 Song” Converse campaign.
As Pitchfork reports, the trio rocked up in Albarn’s London studio for just three days to record the track last September. “Music inspired by a shoe is quite a hard thing to get your head around,” says Albarn. The taster track is actually set to pave the way for a mental 12-minute version, set to debut on the official Gorillaz website next week. James Murphy was certain that “if we’d have had two weeks, we could have made a whole record”.
As usual, Albarn is a busy man, and after a phenomenal 2700% increase in Blur album sales following their bizarre “43-year-olds singing songs written by 26-year-olds” Brits performance, now is an optimum time for a new release.
